When it comes to adding an instant burst of colour and atmosphere to any occasion, few products can match the visual impact of a smoke flare. Whether you’re planning a professional photo shoot, a gender reveal party, a sporting event, or a festival, smoke flares can transform a moment into something truly memorable. At Big Shotter Fireworks, we offer high-quality smoke products that are safe, vibrant, and easy to use, helping you bring your vision to life in the most spectacular way.
What is a Smoke Flare?
A smoke flare is a handheld or ground-based device that emits thick, coloured smoke for a certain duration, usually between 30 seconds to 90 seconds depending on the model. They are often used in photography, celebrations, events, and even film production to create dramatic, eye-catching effects. Unlike fireworks, which are known for their loud bangs and bright sparks, smoke flares focus purely on delivering intense colour and atmosphere.
The smoke itself is created by a non-toxic chemical reaction inside the flare, making it safe for outdoor use when used responsibly. They come in a wide range of colours such as red, blue, purple, yellow, and more — allowing you to match them to your theme or event.
Popular Uses of Smoke Flares
1. Photography and Videography
Smoke flares are a favourite tool among photographers and filmmakers because they add depth, mood, and creativity to a scene. Whether you’re capturing engagement photos, music videos, or promotional shoots, a smoke flare can help you achieve that cinematic look.
2. Gender Reveal Parties
Nothing says “big moment” quite like revealing the gender of your baby with a cloud of pink or blue smoke. At Big Shotter Fireworks, we stock special gender reveal smoke products designed to make the announcement unforgettable.
3. Sporting Events and Celebrations
Fans often use smoke flares in team colours to show their support at matches and parades. It’s a powerful way to boost atmosphere and create unity among supporters.
4. Festivals and Outdoor Events
Smoke flares bring energy and vibrancy to festivals, parades, and charity walks. When used in coordination with music, dancing, or other visual elements, they can transform an ordinary gathering into a spectacular celebration.

Safety Tips for Using Smoke Flares
Although smoke flares are fun and safe when used properly, it’s important to follow basic safety guidelines:
- Use Outdoors Only – Always use smoke flares in open, well-ventilated spaces.
- Avoid Inhaling Smoke – While the smoke is non-toxic, it’s best to stay clear of direct inhalation.
- Wear Gloves – Protect your hands from heat and stains.
- Keep Away from Children – Smoke flares should be handled by responsible adults.
- Follow Instructions – Each smoke flare comes with usage guidelines — always read them before use.
Planning the Perfect Smoke Flare Moment
If you want your smoke flare effect to be truly impressive, a little planning goes a long way:
- Choose the Right Colour – Match your event’s theme or emotion.
- Consider the Wind – Wind direction affects how the smoke travels; plan accordingly for your photos or videos.
- Timing is Key – Smoke flares last a limited time, so have your camera ready before lighting.
- Coordinate with Other Effects – Combine with confetti, balloons, or fireworks for an even bigger visual impact.

A smoke flare is more than just a burst of colour — it’s a way to tell a story, create emotion, and make memories. Whether it’s for a wedding, sports match, photo shoot, or party, the visual magic they create is hard to beat.
